10 Ways to Keep Yourself Safe

  1. Use the BUDDY SYSTEM whenever possible. Let others know where you will be and with whom, and when you will be home.

  2. Try to meet new acquaintances in public places or with other people until you know more about them.

  3. Be alert to your surroundings and the people around you—especially if you are alone or it is dark. Know where help may be if you need it.

  4. Have your keys in your hand and check the back seat area before entering your car.

  5. If you think that you are being followed, drive to a public place or to a police or sheriff’s station.

  6. Never leave drinks unattended even if it’s just for a few seconds.

  7. Trust your gut feelings if you are feeling uncomfortable in a situation, leave if you are able to.

  8. Do not post or give out personal information on social media and networking sites.

  9. Stay in control. Drugs and alcohol are often related to acquaintance rape. If you choose to do them, know your limits and do not rely on others to take care of you.

  10. Know your sexual preferences and limits. Communicate them freely. Say YES when you mean YES, say NO when you mean NO.
