SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Domestic Violence Engagement Advocate provides vital services to families interacting with Ventura County Child and Family Services (CFS), a role that falls in line with all aspects of Coalition for Family Harmony’s mission, including providing direct services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, educating the community regarding violence against women, children, and men, and working to prevent the cycle of violence. Bilingual in English and Spanish is required.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Fundamental Job Requirements

  • Provide scheduled on-site response and domestic violence services to survivors of domestic violence including peer and crisis support, advocacy, community referrals, and connections at the request of Ventura County Child and Family Services.
  • Create and distribute domestic violence information and safety planning brochures to the survivors of domestic violence.
  • Provide education and outreach to community members and service providers on domestic violence topics. 
  • Provide social workers and CFS staff feedback on outreach to identified families; maintain regular presence at CFS Team Meetings and Multi-Disciplinary Team Meetings as a domestic violence survivor advocate.
  • Facilitate and maintain professional relationships with community partners, law enforcement, and medical personnel.
  • Provide individual advocacy, including emergency shelter entry and assistance with filing restraining orders and child custody; when needed, facilitate contact with other Coalition departments for further social service needs.
  • Remain updated and participate in trainings relevant to domestic violence survivors, relevant policies and procedures, and general topics in the domestic violence field.
  • Maintain client files and collection of statistical documents as required by CFS.
  • Database management and statistical report completion
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or other members of the Leadership team

 

 

Schedule

  • This position is 40 hours per week; the weekly schedule requires some flexibility and is subject to change according to the needs of our contracted service providers.
  • Ability to be flexible with work hours between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm, Monday – Friday. 
  •  Due to the essential functions of this job, arriving on time for your shift is an essential requirement.
  • This position is eligible for overtime benefits.

 

 

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social, psychological, or social services background preferred.

 

 

Certifications

  • Must obtain Domestic Violence Counselor certification that meets the requirements under California Evidence Code 1037.1 within one year of hire date.
  • May obtain Sexual Assault Counselor certification that meets the requirements under California Evidence Code 1305.2 within one year of hire date.
  • Must attend our LGBTQ+ 101 Training within 6 months of hire date

 

 

Knowledge Base/Skills

  • Basic computer literacy in Microsoft Office programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and basic knowledge of general office equipment is required. 
  • Proficiency in entering statistical data points in Apricot system within 1 month of training. 
  • Regularly expanding knowledge base on topics of gendered violence, impacts of domestic and sexual assault on the community, working with survivors of violence, and more by reading literature, blog and news posts, etc. is expected.
  • Knowledge of family law legal procedures preferred.

 

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to speak English and Spanish fluently is a requirement.
  • Must have the ability to communicate with clientele over the phone, e-mail, and in-person.
  • Must have the ability to drive a motor vehicle. Position will be required to drive personal vehicle to various sites within Ventura County to provide services.
  • 75% of the fundamental job requirements occur inside the agency’s main office, a 5th floor office suite with elevator access.  The office is not accessible by the public. 25% will occur off-site around Ventura County.
  • Central air and heating is available and can be controlled by staff or by supervisor when thermostat is not accessible.
  • May be required to stand, sit, stoop, bend, and lift/move up to 20 lbs. 
  • Coalition for Family Harmony may accommodate to these physical requirements upon request.

  • Must be able to demonstrate working effectively with and showing respect to all survivors of violence, including those from diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, socioeconomic, sexual preferences and/or identities, gender identities/expression, and political backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate and write clearly and professionally is required.
  • Must demonstrate ability to navigate crisis and solve problems independently, using best judgment and critical thinking skills.
  • Must maintain a positive, friendly, and welcoming attitude with Coalition staff, external service providers, and with all survivors of violence.
  • Must utilize assertiveness, professionalism, and non-violent communication when handling issues with staff, external service providers, and survivors of violence. 
  • Staff is expected to take initiative with working with survivors of violence and during down time to identify and work towards program needs.

 

 

OTHER INFORMATION

  • Must pass Live Scan background check.
  • This position is expected to wear business casual to formal attire, as required by the location and type of service being performed.
  • Travel by car will be required for this position. Must have a California Class C driver’s license, proof of car insurance, a clear DMV record, and access to a functioning motor vehicle. Position is eligible for mileage reimbursement when using personal vehicle for work assignments.
  • The option to telecommute (or to perform essential job duties at home) is assessed on a case-by-case basis by Reporting Manager and, if necessary, by others on the management team.
